New Midwest Hotels to Put On Your Bucket List

Boutique lodgings add a dose of luxury and personality you won't find in basic hotels. Here are some new and renovated lodgings expected to open around the Midwest in 2018, including the Hotel Zachary across from Chicago's Wrigley Field, the Shinola Hotel in Detroit and a glamping site in Keystone, South Dakota, with views of Mount Rushmore.

Hotel Zachary | Chicago, Illinois

Doors opened at this boutique hotel across the street from Wrigley Field in April 2018. Its design is inspired by the work of Zachary Taylor Davis, the architect behind the Cubs' iconic home field.

Renaissance Savery Hotel | Des Moines, Iowa

A $20 million renovation to the historic Des Moines building (at 11 stories tall when completed in 1919, the Savery was Iowa's first skyscraper) will include a new lobby and bar, a larger restaurant and 300 updated rooms. It is scheduled to re-open in 2018.

Cyrus Hotel | Topeka, Kansas

A bar specializing in coffee during the day and transitioning to alcohol in the evening is meant to be the central community space in this $28.6 million boutique hotel. Opening is expected in the summer of 2018.

Shinola Hotel | Detroit

Shinola, the Detroit-based company known for luxurious leather watches and bags, has teamed with urban-revitalization master Bedrock to create a 130-room boutique hotel in Midtown. Book a stay starting in fall 2018.

West Elm Hotel | Detroit

The Brooklyn lifestyle brand is expanding into the hospitality business, and Detroit will receive the first of its brand of boutique hotels. Details are scarce, but and will display work made by local Detroit artists, as well as West Elm products, all of which can be purchased by guests.

Kindler Boutique Hotel | Lincoln, Nebraska

Two downtown buildings joined by a common elevator will be transformed into Lincoln's first luxury hotel by the summer of 2018. The hotel is named for one of the owners' late father, a Lincoln artist whose artwork will be displayed in the hotel.

The Doghouse | Columbus, Ohio

The world's first craft beer hotel attached to a sour brewery is being built by BrewDog and partly funded by an Indiegogo campaign. The hotel, will feature the Punk IPA on tap in each of its 50 rooms, as well as beer-y spa services with hop-infused oils.

Under Canvas Mount Rushmore | Keystone, South Dakota

Step out of a luxury tent equipped with a king-size bed, shower and solar power for views of Mount Rushmore. The glamping site, open this summer, sits on the outskirts of an old gold mine in the Black Hills.

Hotel Goodwin | Beloit, Wisconsin

The hotel will feature 34 guest rooms, a cafe with a menu that speaks to locavores, and rooftop meeting room with outdoor terrace. The name is a nod to the 19th century Goodwin House that served as the community’s luxury hotel until 1904.

Hotel Retlaw | Fond du Lac, Wisconsin

Legend has it John Dillinger stayed at the historic Retlaw during the Prohibition era. By the end of 2018, the building will be restored to its 1920s grandeur, complete with Art Deco touches and live jazz as a backdrop to dinner dates. Added bonus: a full spa with an indoor relaxation pool.
